The 38th Annual Fools’ Rules Regatta will be held this Saturday, August 22, 2015 on the Town Beach at East Ferry in Jamestown, R.I. (rain date is the following day). The cannon will be fired at 9:00 AM to begin construction of the “vessels.” Entrants are allowed two hours to construct a sailing craft on the beach, which must be constructed of non-marine items. The craft may be pre-constructed, but must be disassembled and built again on the beach. Races begin at 11:00 AM with the firing of the cannon to begin the Class 1 race.
Vessels compete for first, second, and third place in each class. Coveted awards of the day include The Karl Smith Most Ingenious Design, The Worst Example of Naval Architechure, and the Frank Newman Judges’ Award. The event has always attracted regional attention, and participants and spectators come from far and wide. Past regattas have been highlighted in Yankee Magazine and the National Geographic’s World magazine.
The event is open to anyone who likes to have fun and be foolish, and there is no entry fee. This year’s chairman will again be Chris Powell, Chief Fool. For information, call 401-423-1492, or visit the Jamestown Yacht Club’s website for information and to be entertained by the rules.

Article 11 of the budget that was recently proposed by Governor Raimondo would create a new statewide property tax. If the Rhode Island General Assembly votes to approve this tax, it would apply, for now, to all non-owner occupied homes, smaller multi-units, mobile homes, condominiums, and vacant land valued at $1 million or more. But the tax can be changed at anytime to apply to owner-occupied homes of any value, including yours. The budget also proposes a 13% private home rental tax on short-term rentals of 30 days or less. The proposal would treat homes, cottages, condos and any properties like hotels by requiring the owners to collect hotel and sales tax on each rental. There’s still time to stop both of these taxes from going into effect.

I have been fortunate to have a long and prosperous career in real estate. Before falling in love with magical Jamestown, I practiced real estate law in Manhattan. I have helped purchasers and sellers close thousands of homes. My professional career has been dedicated to real estate with one notable exception as an art auctioneer and appraiser, fine art being my other passion.
I have a BA from Bucknell University and a JD from New York Law. I have served on the adjunct faculty of NYU’s Real Estate Institute, Pratt Institute and the New York Real Estate Institute, where I lectured and taught real estate licensing courses, business law and real estate broker continuing education.
When I'm not doing real estate, Contemporary art and artist book collecting are some of my longtime passions. I support small-scale local farming and there’s nothing more enjoyable for me than being in and among the enchanting seascapes of Jamestown.

A winter's day in Jamestown. It's frigid, it's icy, it's windy, but there's something beautiful about it too. One thing is for sure, it makes today look like spring! Video by Onne von der Wal.
